Children eye screening camp at Darmasena Artigala Balika Vidyalaya to mark the Children eye health and safety month.

August – Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month To commemorate this important month, an eye screening camp was organized at Dharmasena Balika Vidyalaya, where around 400 students were screened. Thirty students identified with vision impairments were provided with spectacles free of charge. The camp was generously sponsored by Lion Jayantha Abeygunarathna, Chairman of George Gunarathna Optometrists. District Governor Lion Priyantha Perera and the First Lady graced the occasion as Chief Guests, adding significance to this meaningful service activity.

Midday Almsgiving for Meditation Practitioners

On 29th August 2025, under the initiative of Lion Sumith Fernando, a meritorious midday almsgiving ceremony was held for 25 meditation practitioners at the Pelanwatta Isipathanarama Viharaya. This thoughtful initiative aimed to support and honor the spiritual practice of the meditation practitioners by providing them with nourishing meals, reflecting the Lions’ commitment to compassion, community service, and respect for spiritual pursuits.

Alms Hall (දාන ශාලාව) Roof Completion

On 7th September 2025, Lion Lakshantha Degambada of the Lions Club of Kesbewa generously contributed Rs. 200,000 for the completion of the roof of the Alms Hall (Dāna Shālāva) at the Gongaram Purana Viharaya, which had remained unfinished for some time. This donation enabled the temple to complete a vital facility used for community gatherings and religious activities, reflecting a commitment to preserving heritage, supporting spiritual institutions, and serving the community. The project exemplifies the Lions’ dedication to humanitarian service and cultural preservation, highlighting how timely support can restore functionality and dignity to important community structures.

On the 15th of September 2025, Lion Sumith Fernando, a dedicated member of the Lions Club of Kesbewa, made a benevolent contribution of Rs. 50,000 towards the construction of the Sacred Relic Shrine (Dhathu Mandiraya) at the Sri Subhadrarama Maha Viharaya, located in Ihala Kotawera, Welimada.

Dehiwala Beach Clean-Up

On 20th September 2025, the Lions Club of Kesbewa organized a beach cleaning project near Dehiwala Station from 2:30 p.m. onwards. This community service initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, cleanliness, and the preservation of our coastal areas. Lions and volunteers actively participated in removing litter and debris, ensuring a safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable beach environment for the public. The project highlighted the Lions’ commitment to protecting nature, fostering civic responsibility, and inspiring others to take part in environmental conservation. Through this effort, the club demonstrated that even small acts of service can make a meaningful impact, creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable community.

Lecture on Gemology AND GEOLOGY

Today, 5rd batch lecture on Gemology was held for 20 students. This is expected to provide future business opportunities for school children, to nourish future generations with knowledge for the gem business that has spread around the Ingiriya area, and to update their knowledge if their parents are involved in the gem field. The first lecture series was attended by lions club of midcity president , as a Gemologist, and a Gemology Instructor from Sabaragamuwa University. The project chairman was Lion Akila Ukwaththa, and organized by the Lions Clubs of Horana Mid City.

World Children’s Day Celebration – Jinananda Children’s Development Centre

On 1st October 2025, Lion Kumara Rodrigo and Lion Nimali Dikkumbura, together with fellow Lions, celebrated World Children’s Day at the Jinananda Children’s Development Centre, Wellawatte by providing a special meal to the children. This collaborative initiative was aimed at bringing joy, nourishment, and smiles to the young ones, making their day memorable and heartwarming. By sharing a meal, the Lions not only addressed the children’s immediate needs but also reinforced the values of care, compassion, and community service. The project reflected the Lions’ collective commitment to uplifting children, supporting their well-being, and celebrating their innocence and potential. It was a day marked by laughter, togetherness, and heartfelt connection, truly embodying the spirit of Lionism , “We Serve.”

The Lions Club of Kesbewa proudly organized the Elders’ Felicitation Ceremony, a District Project held on Saturday, 4th October 2025, at the Fingara Institute. The event commenced at 8:30 a.m., under the esteemed presence of District Governor Lion Priyantha Perera as the Chief Guest, with Lion Sisira Kumara Gamagae serving as the Project Chairperson. This heartwarming initiative brought together over 300 elder mothers and fathers to celebrate and honor their lives, contributions, and wisdom. Through this project, the Lions aimed to express gratitude, respect, and love for the senior members of the community, fostering joy, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Special Children’s Day Programme

On 11th October 2025, under the leadership of Lion Amal Ravinath, President of the Lions Club of Kesbewa, and with the support of Lion Kingsly Perera, the club organized the distribution of meals to children attending the Special Children’s Day Programme hosted by the People’s Bank, Maharagama. This initiative aimed to bring joy and nourishment to the children, ensuring they could fully enjoy the celebrations. By providing meals, the Lions Club demonstrated its commitment to community service, care for young ones, and spreading happiness. The project reflected the spirit of Lionism — serving with compassion, supporting the community, and sharing smiles with those who need it most. It was a day filled with laughter, happiness, and togetherness, highlighting the importance of nurturing and celebrating children as the future of the community.

Our Lions Club also provided financial assistance for the Lion Service Festival organized by the 306 D2 Lion District. We at the Kalubowila Lions Club in Colombo were able to provide an amount of Rs. 15,000 to obtain the necessary dry rations.

A program to provide underwear to the girls of St. Sebastian's Girls' School in Dehiwala was organized by the Dehiwala Legend Lions Club. The Kalubowila Lions Club in Colombo also provided financial assistance for this. Lion Shamani, a member of our Lions Club, was involved in this program. There are over 800 girls in that school.

The Lions Club of Kesbewa proudly organized an Ayurvedic Herbal Drink Stall at the Lions District Service Carnival 2025, held on the 20th of October 2025 at Moragahahena Maha Vidyalaya. As part of this meaningful initiative, a traditional “Koththamalli” (Coriander-based herbal drink) was freshly prepared and distributed free of charge to Lions and attendees, accompanied by biscuits and jaggery. The project aimed to promote health, vitality, and Sri Lanka’s indigenous wellness traditions, offering participants a natural and refreshing way to rejuvenate amidst the day’s activities. This initiative beautifully blended service with culture, showcasing the Lions Club’s commitment not only to community welfare but also to preserving local heritage and encouraging healthy living. The warm smiles shared over each cup of Koththamalli symbolized unity, care, and the Lions’ enduring dedication to serving with heart and purpose.

Serving with Love: The Hunger Project at Karuna Elders Home

The Hunger Project, organized by Lion Sarath Rajapaksha and Lion Lady Renuka Gunawardana, was held on the 27th of October 2025 at the “Karuna” Elders Home, located on Shri Wajiraghana Mawatha, Boralesgamuwa Road, Maharagama. This compassionate initiative was dedicated to brightening the lives of the elderly residents by offering them delicious homemade meals prepared with love and care. The project embodied the true spirit of service, empathy, and humanity, as the Lions shared not only food but also warmth, respect, and heartfelt companionship with the elders. In keeping with the home’s policy and out of respect for the privacy and dignity of the residents, photographs of the elderly were not taken during the visit.

Mental Awareness Programme

The Mental Wellness Program organized by the Boralesgamuwa Lions Club was held at the Dehiwala Shastra Nanda College. The resources were provided by Lion Shamani Dias, a member of our Lions Club and a Diploma holder in Psychology and Counseling. About fifty Students in grades 10 and 11 participated.

Minaral Water October

The October step of the project to provide 600 liters of clean drinking water to the MICU Unit of the Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital in Colombo every month was carried out on the 28th, with the full support and leadership of our Lions Club Treasurer Sinha Mahinda. Our Lions Club members Sinha Meegolla and Sinha Shamani participated in this.
