Educational Service Project at Kirimandola Kanishta Vidyalaya

The Lions Club of Piliyandala identified a remote school in the Deniyaya area where children from low-income families receive their education under difficult conditions and with limited school facilities. Kirimandola Kanishta Vidyalaya has approximately 110 students. As part of its commitment to supporting the education and welfare of underprivileged children, the Lions Club of Piliyandala organized an educational assistance project for all the students of the school. The Club provided school bags, exercise books, pens, and uniform cloth to all 110 students. In addition, 36 bed sheets were donated to the teachers and other staff members of the school for their use. The total cost of the project was approximately Rs. 600,000. On 20th September 2026, a delegation of 22 Lions and Lion Ladies travelled to the school by hired bus to personally hand over the educational materials to the students. Humanitarian Assistance to the Family of Artist Mr. Dinesh Bogoda

The Lions Club of Piliyandala learned that the wife of popular artist Mr. Dinesh Bogoda was seriously ill with a heart condition and that doctors had recommended a major heart operation to save her life. The estimated cost of the operation was approximately Rs. 1.8 million (18 lakhs). Unfortunately, the family was facing considerable financial difficulties in finding such a large sum of money at short notice to proceed with the necessary medical treatment. Recognizing the urgency of the situation and the family’s distress, Lion Ranjan Handugoda of the Lions Club of Piliyandala generously donated Rs. 25,000 to support the family in meeting the medical expenses. This compassionate gesture reflects the true spirit of Lionism, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and a commitment to helping those in need during difficult times. Humanitarian Service Project – Providing Drinking Water to Drought-Affected Communities

District 306 D2 organized a highly important humanitarian project to support people suffering from a severe drought in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Due to the prolonged drought, many villagers were experiencing an acute shortage of drinking water, causing considerable hardship in their daily lives. Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, the Disaster Management Unit of District 306 D2, with the participation of Lions Clubs, organized a project to distribute 1,000-litre water storage tanks among villagers affected by the water shortage. These tanks enabled the beneficiaries to store drinking water delivered by water bowsers, ensuring a more reliable supply of water for their essential daily needs. The Lions Club of Piliyandala extended its support to this valuable humanitarian initiative by donating Rs. 52,000 for the purchase of two water tanks.

Breakfast and Lunch for Elderly Low-Income Beneficiaries

The Lions Club of Piliyandala organized a community service project to provide refreshments and meals to elderly low-income beneficiaries who visited the Piliyandala Post Office to collect their monthly government allowance. Each beneficiary was served a cup of tea for breakfast. In addition, a parcel of rice and curry was provided to take home and enjoy later. Also they were presented 200 grams of tea packets as a gift. The project was warmly appreciated by the beneficiaries and reflected the club's commitment to serving the elderly and supporting vulnerable members of the community. ---

Provision of Food for Judges and Staff – Sisu Nipunatha Agayeema Competition

Every year, the Kesbewa Shasanarakshana Mandalaya conducts the “Sisu Nipunatha Agayeema” competition for Daham Pasal students, with the objective of enhancing their knowledge, educational standards, and overall development. This year, the competition was held on 13th September 2026 at Piliyandala National School. Approximately 300 officers, including members of the judging panel and other supporting staff, were required to conduct the competition successfully. All these individuals participated in the programme on a voluntary basis, with the noble intention of contributing towards the improvement of Daham Pasal education. At the request of the Kesbewa Shasanarakshana Mandalaya, the Lions Club of Piliyandala provided dry-ration items to enable the organizers to prepare and serve lunch for the judges and other staff involved in conducting the competition. Clean up Sri Lanka

As part of the District 306 D2 “Clean up Sri Lanka” project, the Lions Club of Piliyandala conducted a cleaning programme at the premises of Kirimandola Kanishta Vidyalaya, Deniyaya, on 20th September 2026. The programme was planned to clean the school premises and create awareness among the students about the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. However, due to heavy rainfall prevailing in the Deniyaya area, it was not possible to carry out the planned cleaning activities outside the school buildings. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the programme continued with an educational session for the schoolchildren. The President of the Lions Club of Piliyandala conducted an awareness programme explaining the importance and benefits of cleanliness, personal hygiene, and maintaining a clean school environment. As part of the programme, the Lions Club also handed over cleaning and protective materials, including gloves, garbage bags, aprons and other necessary items

Danaya at Pagnananda Lama Niwasa

On 28th Aug . 2026, Past District Governor Lion Ajith Liyanage and his family organized a Danaya for the children of Pagnananda Lama Niwasa, Wellawatta. There are approximately 60 children residing at the Lama Niwasa. As part of the programme, the children were provided with refreshments including fish buns, cake, bananas, iced coffee and chocolates. In addition to providing the Danaya, PDG Lion Ajith Liyanage and his family donated 50 bed sheets and 15 mosquito nets for the use of the children. The generous gesture brought great happiness and comfort to the children and was a valuable contribution towards their well-being.

This initiative functions as an engaging platform for youth skill development and confidence building through social dancing, simultaneously creating a sustainable fundraising model in collaboration with the Leo Lions Club of Mawiththara. It utilizes recurring workshops led by a past club president who is growing his own dance start-up, generating financial support to help build the academy's infrastructure and operational capacity while linking youth skill development with sustainable youth entrepreneurship. The target population and beneficiaries primarily comprise young people—including Leo members, youth, students, and individuals who struggle with shyness, hesitation, or lack of confidence during social interactions with unfamiliar partners. On August 28, 2026, following the environmental clean-up, the Leo Club of Pilimathalawa successfully hosted Project Piyawara 4.0 – Phase 02—a heartwarming Bun Dansala near the Sri Maha Kataragama Devalaya in Kandy. The Leo Lions Club of Mawiththara was proud to collaborate with the host club, alongside the Leo Clubs of Girls' High School Kandy, Matara Nilwala, Piliyandala, and the Lions Club of Pilimathalawa. Coming together with Devalaya officials, our joint teams successfully distributed over 1,200 fresh buns as simple, much-needed refreshments to tired Perahera dancers, devotees, and visitors amid dense crowds and strict time pressures. Beyond logistics and food hygiene management, this initiative highlighted the true human side of service, fostering deep empathy, inter-club unity, and memorable community connections. Phase 02 beautifully reinforced that meaningful community care often shines brightest through simple, compassionate acts of giving.

During the Kandy Esala Perahera season from August 23 to 28, 2026, the Leo Club of Pilimathalawa successfully hosted Project Piyawara 4.0 – Phase 01. The Leo Lions Club of Mawiththara was proud to join the host club, alongside the Leo Clubs of Girls' High School Kandy, Matara Nilwala, Piliyandala, and the Lions Club of Pilimathalawa, in keeping Kandy City and the sacred areas surrounding the Sri Dalada Maligawa clean. Beyond hands-on clean-up operations amidst massive crowds, our collaborative teams actively conducted environmental conservation awareness programmes to educate devotees, tourists, and vendors on sustainable waste management. Working alongside the Kandy Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Police, and PHIs, this initiative successfully minimized environmental waste, protected cultural dignity, and strengthened inter-club unity. Project Piyawara 4.0 reaffirmed a powerful truth: keeping our heritage cities beautiful is a shared civic responsibility requiring collective action.

Mahā Kavi Maduwa and Prasanna Salpila The Mahā Kavi Maduwa (Poetry Gathering) and Prasanna Salpila, organized by the Kesbewa Cultural Council, were held on the evening of 11 September 2026, near the Piliyandala Clock Tower. The Arawwala Lions Club President, Lion Nandika Perera MJF, provided sponsorship for the stage setup for this cultural event. The main objective of this initiative was to preserve and promote these traditional forms of art, which are gradually disappearing from modern society, and to provide future generations with an opportunity to experience and appreciate them. Many renowned poets and poetry enthusiasts from across Sri Lanka participated in this special programme. The sponsorship for the stage was provided at the request of the Kesbewa Cultural Council, as part of the Arawwala Lions Club’s commitment to supporting and preserving our country’s cultural heritage.

As part of Lions Clubs International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Lion Kokila Jayathilaka of the Arawwala Lions Club conducted a beaded bracelet-making programme with 50 children at the Indira Cancer Trust Foundation in Maharagama. The programme was organized with the aim of promoting the mental well-being and happiness of the children. The children actively participated in making beaded bracelets and experienced great joy and happiness through this activity. Lion Sarangi Maheshika, a member of the Arawwala Lions Club and Leo Club Advisor of the Arawwala Leo Club, and Yusali Jayathilaka, daughter of Lion Kokila Jayathilaka, also participated in the programme. This meaningful initiative provided the children with an opportunity to enjoy a creative and engaging activity while supporting their emotional and mental well-being.

The programme was organized with the aim of improving the mental and emotional well-being of the children. It provided them with a joyful and relaxing experience. Lion Kokila Jayathilaka joined the children in singing songs and created a warm and happy atmosphere for them. Lion Sarangi Maheshika, a member of the Arawwala Lions Club and Leo Club Advisor of the Arawwala Leo Club, and Yusali Jayathilaka, daughter of Lion Kokila Jayathilaka, also participated in the programme. This meaningful initiative was conducted as part of Lions Clubs International’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – September, with the aim of bringing happiness and emotional support to children affected by cancer.
