A Diabetes clinic was successfully conducted to commemorate World Diabetes Day, focusing on Lions International’s global cause of diabetes prevention and care. The session was held for the members of the Ambalangoda Elders Society at Sri Sudarmaramaya temple, with the participation of the Chief Priest, society officers, and Lions club leaders. A special medical clinic was also conducted by Dr. Swarna Meegoda, Senior Medical Officer attached to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, supported by Dr. Jithmal Meegoda. Elders were given the opportunity for basic screenings, medical advice, and personalized consultations. This meaningful health project was jointly organized by the Lions Club of Colombo Kotahena East (306 D3) and the Lions Club of Polgasowita (306 D2). Lions Club Presidents Lion Ramar Kannadasan and Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, along with club officers and members, actively participated and coordinated the event. |

A Diabetes Awareness Programme was successfully conducted to commemorate World Diabetes Day, focusing on Lions International’s global cause of diabetes prevention and care. The session was held for the members of the Ambalangoda Elders Society at Sri Sudarmaramaya temple, with the participation of the Chief Priest, society officers, and Lions club leaders. The keynote educational session was delivered by Dr. Jithmal Meegoda, Registrar at the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya, who explained the causes, early symptoms, risk factors, and long-term implications of diabetes. Practical guidance on lifestyle modifications, healthy diets, and preventive habits were highlighted in an interactive manner. This meaningful health project was jointly organized by the Lions Club of Colombo Kotahena East (306 D3) and the Lions Club of Polgasowita (306 D2). The Lions International Peace Poster Competition was successfully conducted at Sudarmarama Daham Pasala, Ambalangoda under the guidance of the Lions Club of Polgasowita. The program aimed to inspire creativity among students while encouraging them to express the global theme of peace through art. A large number of students from age 11 to 13 participated with great enthusiasm. Prior to the drawing session, students were briefed on the objectives of the Peace Poster program, its history, and the importance of promoting harmony and understanding among communities. Teachers and art instructors supported the students throughout the event. The submitted posters demonstrated impressive creativity, originality, and strong messages of unity, compassion, and peaceful coexistence. A panel of judges evaluated the artworks based on theme interpretation, artistic merit, and overall expression. The best entries were selected to represent the school at the district-level judging. |

Guidance Session on Participating in International Engineering Competitions A knowledge-sharing session was conducted at Dharmaraja Vidyalaya, Piliyandala with the participation of LEO members, to guide students on how to take part in globally recognized Engineering and Innovation competitions. The presentation was delivered by Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, International Fair Director with extensive experience in mentoring young inventors. During the session, students were introduced to major international platforms such as: ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair), TISF (Taiwan International Science Fair), SciFest( Ireland) and IRIS (Initiative for Research & Innovation in STEM). The importance of early exposure to research, innovation culture, and project-based learning was highlighted. Detailed guidance was given on competition requirements, documentation, ethics protocols, and how to convert school-level ideas into globally competitive engineering projects. |

As part of the October Reading Month celebrations, Dharmaraja Vidyalaya, Piliyandala conducted a special literacy development initiative supported by the Lions District Governor’s Akurata Saviyak program. A valuable collection of English reading books was donated to the school library with the objective of strengthening students’ reading habits and improving their proficiency in the English language. Members of Polgasowita LEO club actively participated in the event. Following the book donation, the Lions Club will launch an English Reading and Summary Writing Competition to encourage students to actively use the new reading materials. Students were guided to select a book, read it thoroughly, and write a concise summary capturing the main ideas, character development, key events, and moral of the story. Teachers provided instructions on structuring summaries, improving vocabulary, and maintaining clarity in writing. |
