This handbook provides comprehensive guidance on the entire innovation journey—from idea generation and concept development to proper documentation and effective presentation techniques. It also includes valuable insights and case studies based on inventions by past award winners, offering practical learning opportunities for young inventors. Students were encouraged to actively use this handbook as a key reference in their innovation work. In addition, they were advised to improve their English language proficiency, recognizing it as an essential skill for successfully participating and presenting at international competitions and fairs. This initiative reflects the core values of Lions International by promoting education. |

To address this gap, an Inventors’ Club was successfully established, office bearers were appointed, and the club was formally recognized—thereby strengthening student engagement in innovation and supporting Youth Development and Education & Literacy in line with Lions’ global causes. |

An Idea Generation Session for 30 young inventors of Kotelawala Maha Vidyalaya was successfully conducted under the guidance of Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President of the Lions Club of Polgasowita and International Fair Director. During the session, students presented their initial invention concepts and received constructive guidance on how to systematically develop their projects. Mentors emphasized the importance of commencing with a proper literature review, understanding existing technologies, and identifying research gaps prior to moving into design and experimentation stages. Students were also made aware of the necessity of obtaining ethical clearances where applicable, particularly for projects involving human participation, environmental considerations, or data collection. In alignment with the core values of Lions International, the program highlighted the empowerment of youth through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and service-oriented innovation. |

Evaluation and Guidance on Student Invention Concepts Students submitted their invention concepts, which were reviewed and discussed individually. Each participant received constructive guidance on how to further develop and refine their ideas, with emphasis on feasibility, design improvement, and practical implementation. The session provided valuable direction to help students move from concept to prototype stage. It was also informed that after the next round of submissions, coaching and mentoring will be conducted by a panel of subject experts, offering more specialized technical and innovation guidance. A number of promising and creative concepts were presented by the students. Their enthusiasm, originality, and commitment were highly commendable, and their efforts were greatly appreciated. The initiative continues to encourage young innovators to think critically, solve real-world problems, and progress confidently in their invention journey. |

Continuing the lecture series on emerging technologies for young inventors, Janitha Dissanayake, Lecturer from the School of Computing, University of Colombo, conducted the second session focusing on Arduino design and programming. As many students are already utilizing Arduino platforms for their inventions, the session was highly engaging and interactive. The lecture covered essential concepts in Arduino programming, circuit design, and practical applications, enabling students to strengthen their technical foundation and improve the functionality of their innovation projects. The session emphasized the importance of hands-on learning, problem-solving, and creativity in electronics and embedded systems—key competencies for young inventors in today’s technology-driven world. Students actively participated in discussions and gained valuable insights into real-world applications of Arduino-based solutions. |

A humanitarian eye screening and vision care program was conducted in January in the remote and underserved Ritigala area, targeting economically disadvantaged communities with limited access to basic healthcare. A team of optometrists, together with members of the Lions Club of Polgasowita—President Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Lion Jayantha Abeygunarathna, Lion Jayasiri Attanayake, Lion Sugath Ranasinghe, and Lion Jayarathna Manamperi—carried out comprehensive eye examinations for the community. During the screening, 90 individuals were identified with vision impairments, many of whom had never undergone an eye test before due to financial constraints and lack of access to medical services. Without timely intervention, several were at risk of gradual vision loss and potential blindness. Following the examinations, 90 pairs of spectacles were distributed to all identified beneficiarie. |

Drawing from over 25 years of experience working with student inventors and educators, the session emphasized practical approaches to identifying and nurturing talent within schools. A key highlight of the discussion was the importance of team formation, combining diverse skill sets to achieve better outcomes. It was highlighted that students with strong analytical thinking, documentation, and presentation skills can collaborate effectively with those who possess practical, hands-on craftsmanship. Such balanced teams can significantly enhance the quality and success of invention projects. |

Upon the request of the society, Lion Eng.
