Vision screening : Wetara Vidyalaya

By lions Club of POLGASOWITA on 2026-04-07
Project Chairman : D. J. W. Abeygunaratne

An eye screening camp was successfully organized at Wetara Vidyalaya, where approximately 423 students were screened, ensuring early identification of vision-related issues that could otherwise impact their learning and development. The camp was generously sponsored by Lion Jayantha Abeygunarathna, Chairman of George Gunarathna Optometrists, whose continued commitment to community eye care is highly commendable. Child eye screening is of critical importance globally. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment, and nearly half of these cases are preventable or yet to be addressed. Studies indicate that approximately 19 million children are visually impaired, with uncorrected refractive errors being the leading cause. Early detection through school screening programs plays a vital role in preventing long-term vision problems, improving academic performance, and enhancing overall quality of life.

Webinar : Hydro Power Generation

By lions Club of POLGASOWITA on 2026-03-30
Project Chairman : Jayavilal Meegoda

A webinar on hydropower generation was successfully organized for students, conducted by experienced engineer Prasad Manjula. The session combined fundamental theory with valuable practical insights drawn from real-world experience, giving students a clearer understanding of how hydropower systems operate beyond textbooks. This initiative was especially important for science students and young inventors, as it bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Exposure to real engineering challenges, design considerations, and operational experiences helps students think critically, innovate effectively, and develop problem-solving skills essential for future technological advancement. The program also highlighted the importance of practical learning in STEAM education—encouraging students to move from concepts to creation, and from ideas to implementation. Such learning experiences inspire confidence and nurture a mindset of experimentation.
