Donation of English Books & Proposed Library Building Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda October – Reading Month English reading books were donated to Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda as part of enhancing literacy and promoting reading habits among students during the month of October – National Reading Month. The Lions Club of Polgasowita is planning to construct a new Library Building for the school. The proposal has already been submitted and the project is currently awaiting Government approval. This initiative aims to strengthen students’ access to books, improve language skills, and encourage a continuous reading culture within the school. Disaster Preparedness – Speech Contest Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda In line with World Children’s Day – 1st October Students of Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda were educated on Disaster Preparedness, focusing on the importance of awareness, early warning, safe evacuation, preventive actions and responsible behaviour during emergencies. To commemorate World Children’s Day, a Speech Contest was conducted where students presented their ideas, solutions and reflections on how communities — especially children — should prepare for disasters and protect lives and property. This activity helped to develop public speaking skills, confidence, analytical thinking and communication ability among students while also strengthening their understanding of disaster readiness.

Organized under the District Governor’s “Akurata Saviyak” Program To commemorate World Children’s Day (1st October), the Lions Club of Polgasowita organized a Debate Competition at Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda on the topic “AI: Good or Bad for Students?” Students were trained on essential debating skills prior to the event, and two teams — majority girls — were selected to participate in the final debate. The competition encouraged critical thinking, communication skills, analytical reasoning, and responsible understanding of emerging technology such as Artificial Intelligence. It is planned to expand this initiative further by conducting inter-school debate competitions on similar education-based themes in the near future. Project Chairman: Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda

Disaster prevention: Arts competition

As a key initiative under the District Governor’s prestigious “Akurata Saviyak” program, an Educational Arts Competition on Disaster Prevention and Preparedness was conducted at Siripathi Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda, to mark World Children’s Day (1st October) by tLions club of Polgasowita. Students from Grade 1 to Grade 13 enthusiastically participated, creating drawings, posters and creative art to express: causes of natural and man-made disasters, importance of early warning, safe evacuation steps, preventive measures to protect lives and property The project helped enhance the knowledge of children on disaster preparedness and built awareness about protecting themselves and their families. The best submissions were selected, and winners will be rewarded with: Gifts & Certificates of Achievement, Official recognition in the District Newsletter This initiative supports the national vision of creating a well-informed younger generation who can act responsibly during emergency situations.

Occasion: Sacred Katina Maha Pinkama Dana Program Under the theme “Serving Kindness – Kurakkan Kenda Distribution,” the Lions Club of Arawwala, together with the Leo Club of Arawwala, conducted a heartfelt Dana project by serving Kurakkan Kenda (millet porridge) to more than 300 individuals, including elders and children from the Midullegama community, as part of a special Hunger Relief Program. This spiritually enriching initiative took place at Sisilawardhanarama Temple, Maharagama, spreading warmth, compassion, and togetherness on this blessed and peaceful occasion. ???? AKURATA SAWIYAK˜-A musical therapy session

Under the theme “Akurata Saviyak”, the Arawwala Lions Club, led by Club President Lion Prasadith Padmakumara (LCIF District Coordinator) and Project Co-chairperson Lion Chandraka Wijesooriya, organized an inspirational and motivational session for 300 students from six schools in the Balangoda Waligepola area, focusing on children from low-income and underprivileged families, as well as children with special needs. A musical therapy session aimed at relieving stress among the children was conducted by Lion Kokila from the Arawwala Lions Club, whose inspiring songs were greatly appreciated by all the students and parents present. The Chief Guest for the occasion was District Governor of Lions District 306 D2, Lion Priyantha Perera PMJF, MAF, accompanied by the First Lady Lion Dushanthie Gomes MAF. Members and Leos of the Arawwala Lions Club also participated in this meaningful event.

Project Chairperson: Lion Ginthota Project Description: Due to the severe drought conditions affecting the Yala National Park — located across the Southern and Uva Provinces of Sri Lanka — the Lions Club organized and successfully carried out a humanitarian and environmental service project to provide much-needed drinking water to the park’s wild animals. Date: 05th September 2025 Venue: Yala National Park Contribution: Water Bowser: 1 Total Water Volume: 15,000 Liters Impact: This timely initiative provided essential hydration to elephants, deer, leopards, and many other species suffering from the drought. The Lions Club’s contribution not only helped protect the lives of these wild animals but also supported the broader conservation of Sri Lanka’s natural ecosystems.

Every Mind Matters – Sports for Transformational Development Using the power of sports to heal young minds in Northern Sri Lanka. Through the Every Mind Matters project, World Vision is raising funds to promote sports among children and youth in Sri Lanka’s war-affected Northern region, aiming to address the growing mental health challenges they face. As part of this fundraising effort, the New Zealand Rugby Team, during their recent visit to Sri Lanka, donated rugby gear and apparel used during their matches to be sold as memorabilia. The proceeds go directly to the project fund. As per a request from World Vision - Today, I proudly contributed Rs. 23,000/- to this meaningful cause by purchasing several of these memorabilia items.
