Mental Health and Well-being Awareness Session – Athulathmudali Vidyalaya, Mt. Lavinia To commemorate the Mental Health Week declared by Lions International, an awareness session on Mental Health and Well-being was successfully conducted at Athulathmudali Vidyalaya, Mt. Lavinia. The session was led by International Professional Engineer Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Fair Director of new student inventions for the past 25 years, who shared valuable knowledge and practical guidance on maintaining mental wellness, managing stress, and building a positive mindset. The event was well attended by the students, Principal, and staff, who actively participated and appreciated the importance of mental health in academic and personal life. Innovation in Engineering & Technology Workshop Project Chairman: Lion Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda Venue: Athulathmudali Vidyalaya, Mt. Lavinia Audience: Students, Teachers, Principal Key Highlights A presentation on Innovation in Engineering & Technology was delivered by International Professional Engineer Jayavilal Meegoda, under the auspices of the Lions Club, Polgasowita. The workshop aimed to initiate and nurture the innovation process among students and teachers, encouraging creative thinking, problem-solving, and future inventiveness. As part of the event, a handbook on invention was donated to the school’s Invention Club, providing a valuable resource to guide students in generating and developing new ideas. Gifts were presented to the members of the Invention Club, as well as to student inventors who had participated in school or national-level invention competitions in the previous year — acknowledging and rewarding their creativity and dedication. |

The event was honored by the presence of Lions Clubs International Director Lion David Wineman as the Chief Guest. The District Governor, along with the Zone and Region Chairpersons, also graced the occasion. Several Lion doctors contributed their expertise, ensuring quality care and making the project a remarkable success. |

The Lions Club hosted a dedicated awareness session at Darmaraja Vidyalaya on 8th October 2025 to engage students(200), teachers(10) and parents(200) in meaningful dialogue on mental health. The “Mental Health & Well-Being” initiative is one of the global service focus areas of Lions Clubs International, aiming to mobilise clubs worldwide to respond to rising mental health challenges by awareness-raising, supporting community mental health activities, and building resilience through service. The talk was conducted by Community Police Inspector Manoj Samarasekara (also serving as a counsellor), who delivered an insightful, interactive session designed especially for the school environment. The session covered essential themes such as: defining mental health and well-being; recognising stress, anxiety and emotional challenges among youth; practical resilience-building strategies; the value of seeking help; and the role of parents, teachers and community in supporting mental health. |

Our Lions Club, in collaboration with Derana Laboratories, conducted a diabetes clinic at the site, where we supported research activities for over 250 patients.Laboratory tests and medical consultations were provided free of charge to our patients.Our Lions Club provided an amount of Rs. 15,000 for the laboratory testing equipment for that project and Rs. 6,000 for printing a file cover to be given to those patients. Our Kalubowila Leo Lions Club also joined this project. |

We had the eyesight of five girls at the Shepard girls home in Nawala tested the previous day.They stated that their vision was very poor and that they should be referred to a doctor. Accordingly, we referred them to the Kadawatha Swarna Jayanthi eye Hospital. We provided them with eyeglasses according to the prescriptions given by the doctors for the Golden Jubilee Hospital. And provided all their transportation, foods. |

Held on 25th October, the project focused on supporting underserved community members with vision care. We are proud to share that Lion Chanaka Jayasinghe generously provided free eye checkups and lenses worth Rs. 48,000.00 on behalf of the Lions Club of Piliyandala. Additionally, the Leo Club of Piliyandala sourced reusable eye frames in good state, valued at Rs. 50,000 from H M S Siriwardena Opticians, Rathmalana, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability and service. This joint effort exemplified the power of collaboration between Lions and Leos in creating meaningful impact. |

Every Mind Matters – Sports for Transformational Development Using the power of sports to heal young minds in Northern Sri Lanka. Through the Every Mind Matters project, World Vision is raising funds to promote sports among children and youth in Sri Lanka’s war-affected Northern region, aiming to address the growing mental health challenges they face. As part of this fundraising effort, the New Zealand Rugby Team, during their recent visit to Sri Lanka, donated rugby gear and apparel used during their matches to be sold as memorabilia. The proceeds go directly to the project fund. As per a request from World Vision - Today, I proudly contributed Rs. 23,000/- to this meaningful cause by purchasing several of these memorabilia items. |
