When our Lions Club planted 18 Mee saplings at Sandaraja Maha Vidyalaya in Sevanagala, we didn't just add shade—we restored a sacred piece of Sri Lanka’s heritage. Revered historically as the "Fertilizing Tree of the Nation," the Mee tree holds legendary status in ancient agrarian culture, where royal decrees once protected it near paddy fields. Kings recognized its extraordinary ability to naturally enrich surrounding soil through nutrient-dense leaf litter and bird visits. Useful literally "from head to root," every part of the tree serves a purpose: its sweet flowers provide natural tonics, its seeds yield medicinal Mee oil used in Ayurveda, and its dense canopy creates a natural cooling shield. By planting these saplings, we offer 350+ primary students a healthier microclimate and a living classroom, ensuring this ancient ecological powerhouse grows right alongside the next generation.
